A reinforcing cool front will bring another chance of thunderstorms tonight and Wednesday to Texas. Before tonight’s storm chances, parts of the Concho Valley, Hill Country, Central Texas, South Texas, Brazos Valley, and Southeast Texas will have the opportunity for isolated to widely scattered storms this afternoon. This afternoon’s storms may produce small hail, gusty winds, and brief heavy rain. Most folks won’t get rained on.

Tonight’s thunderstorm chances look to be comparatively higher and more widespread. The highest chance of storms will come after 8 PM and into Wednesday morning across Texoma, North Texas, and Northeast Texas. Some storms may be strong, with hail up to the size of quarters, wind gusts of 40 to 60 MPH, and localized flooding.

Thunderstorms will continue to move south on Wednesday with the cool front, but not everyone will get rain. Storms should be moving at a good clip south with the cool front, so we’re not particularly concerned about storms sitting over a single location for long. Cooler temperatures are expected on Wednesday and Thursday for the northern two-thirds of Texas.

The southern third of Texas will remain hot, with afternoon temperatures in the 90s, and all of Texas will be back into the 80s and 90s for the weekend.

Helene… a Major Hurricane Threat to Florida

Soon-to-be #Helene is poised to be a destructive hurricane for the Gulf-facing coast of Florida. While the system remains disorganized this morning, we expect it to become a tropical storm in the northern Caribbean by this afternoon.

A significant- rapid phase of intensification is expected after moving into the eastern Gulf of Mexico tomorrow. A major #hurricane landfall in northwest #Florida is expected Thursday afternoon. A potentially devastating storm surge of up to 15 feet is expected near and east of the landfall location, with a damaging storm surge forecast into Tampa Bay down to Key West. Helene will become a large hurricane. Such an enormous wind field will result in a larger-than-typical storm surge in severity and scope for much of the Gulf-facing Florida coast.

Though we may see a few showers in Northeast Texas on Friday and Saturday, little to no impacts are expected in Texas. Dry weather for much of Texas is possible for the final days of September.
