Heat and humidity continue across Texas this week, while the Panhandle and West Texas deal with repeated chances for scattered strong to severe storms.
Today, scattered severe storms are possible across the northern Texas Panhandle. The strongest storms may produce localized damaging wind gusts over 70 to 75 mph, hail, heavy rain, and frequent cloud-to-ground lightning. A rogue landspot tornado cannot be ruled out, but the main threat is damaging wind.
Wednesday and Thursday bring a similar setup, with isolated severe storm chances continuing across West Texas and the eastern half of the Texas Panhandle. These storms will be hit-or-miss, but any stronger storm may produce strong winds, hail, heavy rain, and lightning.
For most of Texas, the bigger issue this week is heat and humidity. Afternoon highs will mostly be in the 90s, with triple digits across parts of West Texas, Far West Texas, and the Panhandle. Heat index values may reach or exceed 100 degrees across much of the eastern half of Texas thanks to all the humidity and leftover soil moisture.
By Friday into the weekend, storm chances may begin increasing again across the northern half of Texas as the upper-level jet stream dips a little farther south. Thunderstorm complexes may try to move south out of Kansas and Oklahoma into the Panhandle, Texoma, North Texas, Northeast Texas, and nearby areas.
Rain chances may also begin spreading farther south this weekend into early next week as tropical moisture remains in place. This does not look like a widespread organized severe weather outbreak, but it could bring more lightning, gusty winds, hail, locally heavy rain, and some stronger storms back into the forecast.
