Happy Hump Day, Texas. Summer is still here, and yes, it is still hot. But that does not mean we are completely done with rain chances.
In this Wednesday edition of the Texas Weather Roundup, we look at a quieter couple of days, a storm chance in the Texas Panhandle, and the potential for more scattered showers and storms this weekend into early next week.
Rain chances today will be lower than the last few days as an upper-level high pressure system starts influencing Texas. Still, a few pop-up showers and storms are possible this afternoon near the Texas coast, with an isolated storm or two possible in North Texas and Central Texas.
Tonight, a couple of storms may try to move into the northwestern Texas Panhandle.
On Thursday afternoon and Thursday night, scattered strong to severe storms may develop across the northern Texas Panhandle. The main concerns there would be:
• Damaging straight-line winds
• Some hail
• Heavy rain
• Frequent lightning
Otherwise, the main Texas weather story is heat.
Triple digits are expected today across North Texas, Texoma, the Panhandle, West Texas, the Borderland, and Rio Grande Plains. Most other areas will be in the mid to upper 90s.
The heat continues Thursday and Friday, with upper 90s to low triple digits across much of Texas. Overnight lows will stay warm and muggy, with many areas only dropping into the 70s and low 80s.
The bigger pattern change comes this weekend into early next week. As the heat dome shifts north toward the Northern Plains and Great Lakes, Texas may see less sinking air overhead. That could allow scattered showers and storms to return, especially during the afternoon and evening hours.
Saturday may bring a 30% to 50% chance of showers and storms across the southeastern third of Texas, including areas near San Antonio, Corpus Christi, the Coastal Bend, the Coastal Plains, Southeast Texas, and the Golden Triangle.
By Sunday into early next week, isolated to scattered showers and storms may be possible across a larger part of Texas.
This does not look like one organized statewide storm system right now. It looks more like a summer pop-up pattern. Some folks may get a quick downpour, gusty winds, and lightning, while others stay dry.
Bottom line: it is still summer, and it is still hot. But the rain faucet is not completely shut off, and storm chances may increase again this weekend into next week.
Remember: summer thunderstorms can produce a lot of lightning, localized damaging winds, and heavy rain. If thunder roars, get your keister indoors.
