Tropical Storm Bertha may bring scattered showers, thunderstorms, dangerous rip currents, and minor coastal flooding to portions of the Texas Gulf Coast through Thursday. This remains a low-impact tropical threat for Texas, while triple-digit heat continues to be the bigger statewide weather concern.

Bertha is moving west near the Louisiana coast and may briefly reorganize over the northwestern Gulf. Strong upper-level wind shear should keep the system weak, and it could dissipate before or shortly after reaching the Upper Texas Gulf Coast.
Periods of scattered showers and thunderstorms are possible from Southeast Texas through the Upper and Middle Texas Gulf Coast, Coastal Plains, Coastal Bend, and portions of South Texas.
Possible Texas impacts include:
• Scattered coastal showers and thunderstorms
• Localized brief heavy rainfall
• Lightning and gusty winds near stronger storms
• Dangerous rip currents along the Texas Gulf Coast
• Minor coastal flooding, especially along the Upper Texas Gulf Coast
• An isolated flash-flood risk across portions of the Coastal Plains, South Texas, and Rio Grande Plains
Widespread flooding rainfall is not expected. A higher-end forecast could produce localized totals of one to three inches, but most locations near the coast will receive considerably less. Many Texans will receive no rain at all.
This is not expected to become another Hill Country or Edwards Plateau flooding event. Flood waves are still moving downstream through portions of South Texas, but Bertha’s rainfall should not substantially worsen the ongoing river-flood situation.
Away from the coast, the bigger weather story remains the heat.
A strong upper-level heat dome will remain over Texas through the remainder of July and potentially into early August. Most of the state can expect continued upper-90s and triple-digit temperatures, limited rain chances, oppressive humidity, and very warm nights.
Overnight temperatures will remain in the upper 70s and 80s across much of Texas. Houston may remain in the middle 80s for much of the night, leaving little meaningful heat relief for people without reliable air conditioning.
The Upper Texas Gulf Coast and Golden Triangle may receive brief relief Thursday because of additional clouds and scattered storms. That relief will be temporary.

For coastal conditions, follow local beach flags and instructions from lifeguards. Dangerous rip currents can occur even when the weather at the beach appears relatively calm.
During the heat, drink water regularly, take frequent breaks, and check on people without dependable air conditioning.
