Nearly two feet of rain fell overnight in parts of the Golden Triangle, and Edouard’s moisture isn’t done. Another 7 to 10 inches is possible tonight farther north — while the rest of the state deals with a 90,000-acre wildfire. It’s your Texas Weather Roundup for Wednesday, September 2, 2026.
WHAT HAPPENED OVERNIGHT
Nearly two feet fell in spots from Lumberton, south of Woodville, southeast of Livingston, with a flash flood emergency issued overnight.
The cause is training — cells moving repeatedly over the same line, like a train on tracks. That’s how you get double-digit totals in a hurry.
WHERE EDOUARD IS NOW
Edouard is no longer a tropical cyclone. Wind and storm surge are done. The rain is not.
The center is west of Lufkin and east of Crockett, moving northwest through the day with rain — less intense than overnight — into East Texas, eastern North Texas and the eastern Brazos Valley. The heavy band moved north with daylight, so the Golden Triangle starts drying out.
TONIGHT — THE SECOND ROUND
The Weather Prediction Center had a High Risk — Level 4 of 4 — for this morning. Going forward we’re watching the Piney Woods and areas southeast of DFW.
Tonight could bring the same thing again: rain concentrating near Edouard’s center, rates going up, cells sitting over the same areas. Another night of double-digit totals in a few counties, farther north than this morning.
By Thursday morning, heavy rain should be underway east of Dallas down toward Lufkin — Athens, Palestine, Crockett. Some could pick up 7 to 10 inches. Most won’t, but where it happens there will be flooding.
HOUSTON
You haven’t had much out of this yet. Pockets of heavy rain may move in this evening — not directly from Edouard, just the moisture in place. If storms fire, 3 to 5 inches is possible.
THURSDAY
The concentrated rain weakens and spreads out Thursday afternoon into scattered storms across North Texas, the Brazos Valley, East Texas and Southeast Texas.
Separately, the western third sees monsoonal activity unrelated to Edouard — the Panhandle, West Texas, the Permian Basin, Trans-Pecos, Big Bend and the Borderland. Cloud-to-ground lightning, heavy rain, gusty winds.
Not an issue for most folks west of Interstate 35.
THE PATTERN AHEAD
The jet stream stays well to our west and north, as it does most summers. The heat dome meanders, but nothing parked right on top of us.
Without that direct high pressure and sinking air, and with plenty of moisture around, we may start seeing more daily pop-up storms. Residual moisture from Edouard hangs around the eastern half through the end of the week.
No cold front, no pattern change, no statewide rain event in sight.
FIRE DANGER — AND THE ROSS FIRE
High to Very High fire danger today anywhere not seeing rain: North Texas, the Panhandle, South Texas and the Rio Grande Valley. The Ross Fire in Palo Pinto and Jack Counties is now 90,000 acres, 31% contained.
Thursday, High to Very High continues along and west of I-35, lower in the eastern third. Worth noting: the Ark-La-Tex and Northeast Texas may not get much rain, so fire danger continues there.
Friday, Moderate to High across much of Texas, with Low in the western quarter and across the Brazos Valley, Southeast Texas, the Golden Triangle and the Piney Woods.
TEMPERATURES
Upper 80s across the eastern Brazos Valley, Piney Woods and Southeast Texas under rain and clouds. 89 in Lufkin — ridiculously humid. 93 Houston, 89 Beaumont, 95 Texarkana, 100 DFW, 102 in Abilene, Wichita Falls and Childress, 98 Lubbock and Amarillo, 102 San Antonio, 100 Austin, 107 Laredo.
Tonight, mostly 70s, a few 60s in the Davis Mountains and Dallam County, 80s in the urban heat islands around Houston and Galveston.
Thursday, 100 to 105 across the western half and South Texas. Only 93 in Dallas with cloud cover, 95 Fort Worth and Waco, 93 Houston and Tyler, 91 Galveston and Beaumont.
Friday, back to 98 in DFW and Lufkin, 100 in San Antonio and Austin, 102 Abilene. The humidity is going to be atrocious. Weekend: mid to upper 90s to low triple digits.
Flooding risk tonight and Thursday. Fire danger everywhere else. Worst of both worlds.
Turn around, don’t drown.
