Flash flood warnings are up again along Interstate 45 as Edouard’s remnants make one last mess — but we should finally be done with this system by tonight. It’s your Texas Weather Roundup for Thursday, September 3, 2026.
OVERNIGHT WASN’T AS BAD AS IT COULD HAVE BEEN
We were blessed that things didn’t go the way some of the high-resolution guidance suggested. A couple of flash flood warnings, some showers and storms, but nobody picked up another 20 inches.
That changed after sunrise. Rain expanded and we’ve got flash flood warnings out the wazoo again across southeastern North Texas along Interstate 45 — around Fairfield down to Buffalo, north of Madisonville.
Scattered showers are still making a mockery of things across the Golden Triangle, and storms are popping up over the Houston metro, which undoubtedly means somebody’s about to find out how to flood a car.
Please don’t drive into high water. That’s your public safety advice of the day.
THIS AFTERNOON
Scattered thunderstorm chances continue across Central Texas, the Brazos Valley, Southeast Texas and even North Texas as afternoon heating lets the bubbles bubble.
Separately, scattered storms are possible in the Panhandle and West Texas — that’s monsoonal activity, nothing to do with Edouard. Y’all need the rain too, so that’s fine by me.
FLASH FLOOD OUTLOOK
The Weather Prediction Center has isolated to scattered flash flooding possible today across southern and eastern North Texas, the Brazos Valley, Central Texas and Southeast Texas, with corridors southeast of Dallas at the highest risk. That’s exactly what we’ve seen this morning.
There’s also a chance in the Borderland and far West Texas around El Paso with monsoon pop-ups this afternoon and evening.
Friday that risk gradually diminishes, though we’ll keep watching far West Texas, Central Texas, the eastern Hill Country, the Brazos Valley and Southeast Texas.
FINALLY DONE WITH EDOUARD
Tonight into tomorrow it looks like we’re finished with this system. Friday brings a more typical summertime setup with isolated afternoon thunderstorms possible across several regions — but a large majority of folks won’t see a thing.
FIRE DANGER CONTINUES
On the flip side, anywhere that hasn’t gotten rain stays Moderate to High today with locally Very High possible.
Friday, Moderate to High across most of the state, with Low where rain fell — the Brazos Valley, southeastern North Texas, Southeast Texas, plus the Big Bend and Borderland.
Saturday improves to Moderate to Low with a few smidgens of High. Hopefully that means no more 20,000-acre fires. But the grass is still dry anywhere the tropical mischief didn’t reach, so be mindful and make sure your equipment’s in working order.
THE HEAT DOME IS WEAKER NOW
Looking at height anomalies at 500 millibars over the next week, the heat dome stays near Texas — but it is definitely not as intense as what we dealt with through most of August.
That means we may squeeze out pop-up shower and storm chances at times, and there are indications we start letting off some heat across the western half next week.
Still no big pattern changes on the horizon. Rain chances into the weekend and next week come mostly from monsoonal activity out west, plus lingering tropical moisture and the sea breeze east.
TEMPERATURES
Hot across the western half today with triple digits. But in the Brazos Valley, North Texas east of I-45 and down into Southeast Texas, upper 80s to low 90s — thank the moisture, clouds and rain. The humidity will be atrocious, and you’ll pay for it next week with all that soil moisture.
Tonight, mostly 70s statewide with a few 60s in the Davis Mountains and the northwestern Panhandle.
Friday: 95 in Dallas, 91 in Bryan-College Station, 93 in Houston, 91 in Beaumont, 93 in Tyler, 98 in Austin, San Antonio and Fort Worth. Triple digits across northwest Texas, the Panhandle, West Texas, down through the Rio Grande Plains and South Texas. 95 in El Paso.
Saturday, Sunday and Monday look similar — mid to upper 90s to low triple digits. It’s September and it still feels like summer.
We’ll see more flood warnings through the day. Turn around, don’t drown. And stay away from creeks and streams in areas that have had all this rain.
