Isolated storms for a few of you on Labor Day, but for most of Texas it’s just another hot summer day. Burn bans are back up to 207 counties. It’s your Texas Weather Roundup for Monday, September 7, 2026.
SEVERE STORM RISK TODAY
SPC has the Toledo Bend Reservoir area down into the eastern Golden Triangle and far East Texas along the Louisiana line in a risk of isolated severe storms this afternoon, with localized damaging winds the threat.
Non-severe thunderstorms are possible as far west as the Hill Country, Central Texas, the Coastal Bend and the Rio Grande Valley.
TODAY & TUESDAY
Isolated storms across the Hill Country and Central Texas this afternoon, fewer than yesterday. The sea breeze may fire a few showers along the Gulf Coast.
Tuesday is more active across the eastern quarter of Texas and down the Gulf Coast, with isolated to widely scattered afternoon storms bringing cloud-to-ground lightning, gusty winds and heavy rain. An isolated storm or two in far West Texas and the Borderland both days.
A majority of Texas stays hot and dry.
THE HEAT DOME ISN’T GOING ANYWHERE
The heat dome is centered almost right on top of us today. Later this week it shifts into the southwestern US, then goes round heading into next week.
There is no indication this upper-level high pressure goes away completely. The pattern we have now is probably what sticks for the first half of September.
There are hints of a weak front reaching the Panhandle later this week, and models flirting with something mid-month for northern Texas. Still weather model fantasy land — I wouldn’t hang anything on it.
207 COUNTIES UNDER BURN BANS
We’re at 207 of 254 counties under a burn ban — and that number went up, not down.
A few East Texas counties may come off thanks to Edouard’s rain last week. But most of the state remains very dry.
FIRE DANGER
Today: Low to Moderate with pockets of High in the Panhandle, North Texas, the Big Country, Texoma and South Texas. A lot better than two weeks ago.
Tuesday: similar, with pockets of High in North Texas and the Panhandle. Still not a good time for outdoor burning — afternoon fires can spread quickly.
Wednesday: High continues in North Texas, the Ark-La-Tex, the Panhandle and Big Country. Rest of the state Low to Moderate.
RAIN OUTLOOK
Not much going on outside that Panhandle front Wednesday and Thursday, which could bring isolated to scattered storms plus a modest temperature downtrend. Along the Gulf Coast the sea breeze stays active daily. A vast majority of Texas will not see rain this week.
Through 7 AM Saturday, the best regional chance runs from the Coastal Plains around the Victoria Crossroads northeast through Houston, Galveston, Beaumont and into East Texas. A few lucky folks out west too.
None of that is busting any droughts.
TEMPERATURES
Toasty today. 100 in San Antonio, Austin and Eagle Pass, 102 in DFW, 104 in Wichita Falls, 96 in Amarillo and Lubbock.
Tonight, 66 in Dalhart and Alpine in our highest terrain. Everyone else in the 70s, with 80s in the urban heat islands. It’s September — 80s for overnight lows is getting obnoxious.
Tuesday is almost identical. 95 in Houston, 93 in Beaumont, 100 in Texarkana and Paris, 102 in DFW and Waco, 102 in McAllen, 100 in Del Rio, 104 in Wichita Falls.
Wednesday, rinse and repeat — 90s to low triple digits.
A WEAK FRONT THURSDAY
Thursday is a little less hot in the Panhandle as that weak front slides down before stalling. It won’t get far into Texas, but the Panhandle gets 7 to 9 degrees off, mostly 90s. Everyone else, same as today.
Friday morning: 62 in Dalhart, and somebody in Dallam County might touch the 50s. 68 in Amarillo and Alpine, 73 in Lubbock. Still 80s in DFW, Austin, San Antonio and Houston.
By Friday afternoon that cool-off is long gone. Triple digits back in the Panhandle, West Texas, North Texas, the Concho Valley, Central Texas and South Texas.
Thanks to Edouard’s rain, 90s in the Brazos Valley, Southeast Texas and East Texas — a good example of how soil moisture holds air temperatures down, though the heat index still feels unpleasant.
The weekend stays hot.
Stay hydrated. Mama Nature will not hesitate to give you a sunburn. When thunder roars, get your keister indoors.
