Texas Weather Roundup evening update, Wednesday, September 30, 2026. Short one tonight. It’s time to start looking out the window.
TONIGHT
A pretty gnarly line of storms sets up this evening in the eastern Permian Basin, Northwest Texas and west Central Texas. It moves east into the Big Country, Concho Valley, Edwards Plateau and Hill Country before 7 AM Thursday.
If you’re along and east of a line from Childress to Midland to Fort Stockton, west of I-35, you’ll probably see rain and storms before sunrise.
The strongest storms can bring strong to locally damaging winds and very heavy rain, with 2 inches or more in 30 to 45 minutes. A few spots could top 6 inches tonight, though that’ll be localized. A brief tornado or two can’t be ruled out, plus plenty of lightning.
WATCHING THE HILL COUNTRY
These storms won’t move fast. Where one sits for more than 45 minutes to an hour, that’s where trouble starts. There’s some sign of that over the northern Edwards Plateau and parts of the Hill Country overnight, with storms developing near the border around midnight and hanging around before the main line arrives around 5 or 6 AM.
THURSDAY & FRIDAY
It’ll be a wet morning commute from DFW down to Austin and San Antonio. If the line moves even slower than expected, it just means more rain.
Thursday is the day most of the eastern two-thirds gets rained on, with another round along and east of I-35 Thursday afternoon, Thursday night and Friday morning. Friday stays wet across East and Southeast Texas as a Pacific cold front pushes the heavier rain southeast.
HOW MUCH RAIN
Some folks could see 5 to 7 inches from tonight through Thursday night. That’s the exception, not the rule. For most of y’all, this is a good soaking rain we need. Where too much falls too fast, that’s where flooding happens.
SEVERE RISK THIS EVENING
Storms in the Concho Valley, Big Country and Northwest Texas this evening could bring scattered damaging wind gusts, hail and a brief tornado.
If we get tornado warnings or high-end flooding overnight, we’ll go live. Turn around, don’t drown.
