The Gulf tropical storm is expected to become a hurricane, possibly a major one, before landfall near Alabama and the Florida Panhandle. For Texas, it’s a quiet, warm week, and next week looks more active.

Texas Weather Roundup, Wednesday, October 7, 2026.
THE NEXT TWO DAYS IN TEXAS
Not much going on. Some upper-level clouds, a little moisture along the coast and in the Rio Grande Valley, and maybe a couple of light showers in the Big Bend and Borderland. Along the coast, expect dangerous rip currents and some flooding at high tide.
THE GULF TROPICAL STORM
We’ve gone from tropical blob to tropical mischief, and we’re about to escalate to tropical spinny-spinny uh-oh. The storm in the southwestern Gulf is expected to become a hurricane tonight or tomorrow morning as it moves northeast. It turns north late Thursday into Friday morning, heading toward the Alabama and Florida Panhandle coast, and guidance has been trending a little farther east.
Significant strengthening is likely today into Thursday, and it could make a run at major hurricane status, which is Category 3 or stronger with sustained winds of 111 mph or more. It should weaken some Friday as it runs into wind shear, but that also spreads out the wind field, which can actually make impacts worse.
Expect tornadoes, very heavy rain and storm surge, mainly along and east of landfall. The National Hurricane Center’s peak surge forecast is 4 to 7 feet above ground from near Mobile, Alabama, east through Pensacola to Indian Pass, Florida.
WHAT IT MEANS FOR TEXAS
Rough surf and high tide issues along our coast. That’s about it. We’re keeping our neighbors to the east in our prayers.
FIRE DANGER
Mostly Low statewide today, with pockets of Moderate to High in the Ark-La-Tex and Piney Woods. Friday, it climbs to Very High around Toledo Bend and in the Piney Woods of far East Texas, which missed out on much of last week’s rain.
NEXT WEEK GETS ACTIVE
This weekend stays dry. Sinking air on the west side of the hurricane may even warm things up a bit.
Next week, the jet stream dives in from the West Coast like a big old jet bomber. That brings rain chances back to western Texas early in the week, then more active weather statewide Wednesday night through Saturday, likely with a cold front. Moisture from another Pacific hurricane could add to it, a little like last week. That’s beyond seven days, so it’s weather model voodoo land, but long-range data has been consistent.
And of course this happens when I have plans.
TEMPERATURES
Today is a little warmer, with more 90s back: 95 in Laredo, 93 in Houston, 91 from Abilene to Childress. DFW, Waco, Austin and San Antonio stay in the 80s.
Tonight: upper 50s to low 60s across the northwestern two-thirds, 70s along the coast.
Thursday and Friday: mostly mid 80s to mid 90s. That’s above average for October, but after July, August and September, it feels a lot better, especially with cool nights. Saturday: 80s to low 90s. Sunday: a few more 90s.
CPC leans warm for the first half of next week, then trends cooler and wetter late in the week.
