Hurricane Isaias makes landfall in Florida, and its dry west side brings Extreme fire danger to East Texas this weekend. Then October heat builds next week, with 100 in Laredo, before a real cold front arrives.

Texas Weather Roundup, Friday, October 9, 2026.
HURRICANE ISAIAS
Isaias is now a major hurricane in the eastern Gulf, moving north-northeast quickly at about 16 mph. Landfall is expected late this afternoon or early this evening, most likely in the Florida Panhandle.
As it comes ashore, it starts an extratropical transition. It’s been feeding off the warm Gulf, and now the jet stream and wind shear take over. That weakens it, but the wind field expands a lot. That means a bigger tornado threat than usual for a landfalling system, and a nasty swath of wind on the normally weaker west side, which could hit Mobile hard tonight. By tomorrow morning it races into central Alabama with widespread damaging winds and a lot of downed trees and power lines.
WHAT IT MEANS FOR TEXAS
No rain for us, just high tide coastal flooding along the coast. But being on the dry west side matters. Sinking air there warms and dries us out, a little like September 2011, when Tropical Storm Lee’s dry winds fanned the Bastrop fires. Thankfully most of the state got rain last week, so we’re not in that kind of shape. But the Piney Woods and Toledo Bend didn’t get much rain at all.
EXTREME FIRE DANGER EAST
Today and Saturday, the Texas A&M Forest Service has Very High to Extreme fire danger across the Piney Woods of East Texas, the Ark-La-Tex and around Toledo Bend Reservoir, with gusty winds, very low humidity and heat.
Elsewhere, fire danger is climbing again as we dry out. Grass fires will spread more easily across more of Texas this weekend, so don’t burn, and watch for dragging chains.
THE WEEKEND
South to southeast winds, mostly sunny skies, no real rain, and hotter temperatures, with humidity creeping up through the weekend.
NEXT WEEK
Two Pacific hurricanes are involved. One brings tropical storm moisture into California this weekend. Moisture from Hurricane Simon could then interact with an upper-level trough moving into the western third of Texas Tuesday and Wednesday, bringing storms, and maybe a few severe ones in the Panhandle Tuesday afternoon and night.
Most of Texas likely stays dry through Thursday. Then Thursday and Friday, a cold front moves in with a better shot at rain for North Texas, the Big Country and Texoma, possibly more than an inch in spots, and much cooler air behind it. It doesn’t look like a widespread flooding setup.
HIDEOUS HUMIDITY
Today: more 90s, feeling more like September than October. Tonight is still pleasant, with 50s and 60s across the northern two-thirds.
This weekend: upper 80s to 90s. By Monday morning, lows jump into the upper 60s and 70s as Gulf moisture flows in. Monday highs: 98 in Laredo, 95 in Fort Stockton and Childress.
Tuesday morning is when the humidity gets atrocious, with lows of 77 in Austin, San Antonio and Houston, and 80 in Corpus Christi and Galveston. That’s about what our highs should be this time of year. Tuesday highs: 100 in Laredo, 95 in Austin, San Angelo, Abilene and Wichita Falls, 93 in DFW, San Antonio and Houston. That’s near record territory for mid-October. El Paso stays at 84, so go west if you want nice weather.
It stays that way until Crashy the Cold Front arrives late next week. CPC brings fall back next Friday through Sunday, with better rain chances Thursday through Sunday.
Next regular video is Monday.
