Texas Weather Roundup, Wednesday, October 14, 2026.
SEVERE RISK TODAY
Scattered severe storms are possible this afternoon into tonight across Northwest Texas, west Central Texas, the Permian Basin and the eastern Big Bend, including Odessa, Midland, Sweetwater, Abilene, Fort Stockton, Wichita Falls, Vernon, Quanah and Childress.
The strongest storms could produce hail up to tennis ball size and wind gusts over 75 mph, and a brief tornado can’t be ruled out, especially with any supercells in Northwest Texas late this afternoon through mid-evening.
COVERAGE PLAN
I’m out of the office this afternoon and evening, so we won’t have continuous live tornado coverage today. We’ll post updates on social media, and the 24/7 live radar stream stays up.
FLOOD RISK
Tonight, the flood risk covers the Big Bend, Permian Basin, Concho Valley, Big Country, West Texas, the Panhandle and Northwest Texas. A Level 3 of 4 includes Vernon, Quanah, Iowa Park and Burkburnett.
Thursday, flash flooding stays possible across western North Texas, Northwest Texas, the Big Country, Concho Valley, Permian Basin and Big Bend. Another 1 to 4 inches is possible in that corridor, locally more, on ground that already got heavy rain yesterday.
The eastern half mostly gets sprinkles. A few storms could make it into North Texas and Texoma early Thursday, which could mean a wet morning commute in DFW.
EXTREME FIRE DANGER FRIDAY
Behind the cold front, the eastern half of Texas sees Very High to locally Extreme fire danger Friday. North winds over 30 mph and plummeting humidity, on ground that didn’t get rain this week. Any fire that starts could become a problem quickly.
THE COLD FRONT
The front moves south in a hurry Thursday night into Friday with gusty north winds. It pushes the Gulf moisture back offshore, so this weekend and the first half of next week look dry and calm.
Today: 70s in the Panhandle, but mid to upper 90s across the eastern 75% of Texas and 100s in the Rio Grande Plains.
Friday morning: 40s in the Panhandle with wind chills in the 30s, 50 in Lubbock, 50s in the Big Country and Hill Country. Friday highs: 50s across the western third, 60s for North Texas, the Big Country and Hill Country with wind chills in the 50s. Houston and Laredo’s highs may come early before falling.
SATURDAY MORNING FREEZE
A freeze is now forecast in the northern Panhandle Saturday morning, with upper 20s near the Oklahoma line and 30 in Dalhart. Agricultural interests, take note. Also 37 in Amarillo, 41 in Lubbock, 30s in the Davis Mountains, 40s in the Big Country and Hill Country, 50 in Fort Worth, 53 in Waco and Austin, 57 in San Antonio and 62 in Houston.
Saturday highs: 60s across the western half, upper 60s to 70s east. Sunday morning: 40s and 50s for most of us. A spectacular fall weekend.
