Texas Weather Roundup, Friday, October 16, 2026.

CRASHY THE COLD FRONT HAS ARRIVED
That front came barreling south overnight. The north winds stay gusty today and may get even stronger as skies clear and mix the stronger winds down. They ease up Saturday, and by Saturday night into Sunday morning, winds go nearly calm statewide.

The only rain left is in the Big Bend, plus maybe a few showers in the Rio Grande Valley. Then it’s a dry weekend for all of Texas.

EXTREME FIRE DANGER EAST
Even with cooler temperatures, the humidity has plummeted. Add drought-stressed fuels and no recent rain across the eastern half, and fire danger today is Very High to Extreme. Gusty north winds would push any fire quickly to the south. Please be careful.

Saturday, fire danger stays elevated in the Piney Woods, Golden Triangle, Toledo Bend area, Brazos Valley and Southeast Texas, down through the Coastal Plains, Coastal Bend and Rio Grande Valley. Sunday looks better.

FIRST FREEZE TONIGHT
A freeze is forecast tonight across the South Plains and most of the Texas Panhandle: 28 in Dalhart, 32 in Pampa and Plains, and right around freezing in Amarillo. 35 in Lubbock. If you’re in the Panhandle or West Texas, I’d bet on frost or a freeze, so protect your sensitive plants.

Elsewhere tonight: 30s in the Permian Basin and Trans-Pecos, 33 in Alpine, 41 in Wichita Falls and San Angelo, mid-40s in Kerrville and Fredericksburg, 48 in DFW and El Paso, 50 in Austin and Waco, 53 in San Antonio and 55 in Houston.

THE WEEKEND
Saturday is mostly sunny and beautiful, with 50s and 60s for most of Texas and 70s along the coast and in South Texas.

Sunday morning is chilly too: 30s along and west of Highway 281, 40s into Central Texas, the Brazos Valley and Piney Woods, and 50s in South Texas. Light winds mean not much wind chill.

NEXT WEEK
A ridge builds back in, keeping things dry for at least five days. A slow warm-up starts Sunday, with mid to upper 70s Monday and 80s back by Tuesday, plus some 90s in the Rio Grande Plains.

Humidity is slow to return, so nights stay pleasant. That 30-degree swing between warm afternoons and cool mornings can push fire danger back up, though.

Rain chances could return to the western third of Texas around midweek with the next system, depending on whether it can get past the ridge over East Texas.
