Texas is seeing another round of unsettled weather today, with showers and thunderstorms lingering in some regions while the tropics heat up in the Atlantic. From Central Texas to the Gulf Coast, residents can expect spotty storms, summer heat, and important tropical developments that could impact beach conditions along the East Coast. Here’s your detailed Texas weather update, including the latest on Tropical Storm Erin and a potential system in the Bay of Campeche.
Storms Continue for Parts of Texas
Showers and thunderstorms are expected to persist this afternoon across portions of Central Texas, the Brazos Valley, and East Texas following a wet and stormy morning for parts of north and northeast Texas.
This morning’s storms were triggered by a mesoscale convective vortex (MCV)—a compact area of low pressure that enhanced lift in the atmosphere. Unfortunately, this feature was not detected by most weather models, resulting in a notable forecasting miss.
As we move through the afternoon, isolated to widely scattered thunderstorms may also develop across the Golden Triangle, Southeast Texas, coastal plains, and South Texas. These storms could produce:
Dangerous cloud-to-ground lightning
Locally heavy rainfall
Gusty winds
Safety Reminder: When thunder roars, go indoors!
Tonight and Thursday’s Outlook
Tonight is expected to be quieter—though as last night proved, forecasts can change quickly. Pop-up thunderstorms are possible again on Thursday across the eastern half of Texas, but most residents will likely remain dry.
Tropical Update
Tropical Storm Erin
In the Atlantic, Tropical Storm Erin is moving rapidly westward. Forecast guidance indicates it could strengthen into a hurricane by Friday and potentially reach major hurricane status by Sunday as it passes east of the Bahamas.
While Erin is expected to curve north and remain east of the United States, this is not guaranteed. We will continue to monitor it closely. Regardless of its exact track, dangerous rip currents and increased wave action are likely along Atlantic-facing beaches next week. Erin poses no threat to the Gulf of Mexico.
Bay of Campeche Disturbance
A separate tropical disturbance is expected to traverse the Bay of Campeche in the coming days before making landfall in Mexico. Development chances remain low. However, some of its tropical moisture may reach Texas this weekend into early next week, bringing scattered showers and storms. No significant impacts are anticipated at this time.
Temperatures Holding Steady for August
Texas will continue to experience seasonable August heat, with forecast highs ranging from:
Upper 80s in the Davis and Guadalupe Mountains
Around 106°F in Laredo
Mid to upper 90s for most of the state
Highs will edge closer to the century mark as we approach the weekend and early next week.
