After a stormy morning across parts of Northwest Texas, Texoma, and North Texas, we expect thunderstorm chances to increase this afternoon through the evening. Storms will expand into the Concho Valley, Hill Country, Central Texas, Brazos Valley, East Texas, Southeast Texas, and the Golden Triangle.
What to Expect This Afternoon & Evening
Damaging winds: Stronger storms may produce gusts over 60 mph.
Lightning: Expect frequent cloud-to-ground strikes.
Heavy rain: Localized flash flooding is possible, though widespread flooding is not anticipated.
As always, summer thunderstorms still pose risks. If thunder roars, go indoors.
Storms Continue Into Thursday
Thunderstorm chances will persist overnight into Thursday morning across the Hill Country, Central Texas, and Southeast Texas. By Thursday afternoon, new storms are expected to develop across the eastern half of Texas and into South Texas. Hazards include:
Gusty winds
Cloud-to-ground lightning
Possible hail
Locally heavy rainfall
For those in aviation, expect more disruptions as major hubs in the eastern half of the state face storm impacts.
Looking Ahead: Relief and a Pattern Shift
Highs will trend downward following Tuesday’s extreme heat. By early next week, a potential summer cool front may dip into northern Texas. At the same time, an active weather pattern looks to develop in the Panhandle and West Texas, bringing more widespread rainfall opportunities.
Tropical Update
Hurricane Erin continues to churn off the East Coast of the United States, producing significant coastal flooding and strong winds. While Erin will not impact Texas, its large size extends hazards far from the storm’s center. Elsewhere, two systems in the eastern Atlantic are being monitored, though neither is expected to threaten the U.S.
Typical Summer Heat Persists Elsewhere
Across the rest of Texas, expect the usual August heat and humidity to continue into the weekend.
