Texas is getting a full sampler platter of winter weather as we move through the middle of the week. Snow, rain, storms, cold air… pick your flavor. Here’s what to expect tonight, Thursday, and into the weekend across the Lone Star State.

Snow Likely in the Panhandle Tonight Into Thursday

A strong upper-level disturbance is sweeping across the state, and confidence continues to increase that parts of the Texas Panhandle will see accumulating snow overnight and into Thursday morning.

What to Expect:

  • Timing: Late tonight through Thursday morning

  • Where: Much of the Texas Panhandle, possibly extending into far NW Texas

  • Amounts:

    • Most areas: light snow or a dusting

    • Narrow bands: 1–4 inches possible, highly localized

    • One town may get nothing while the next town over gets several inches

  • Impacts:

    • Snow falling faster than it melts could lead to slick, snow-covered roads

    • Potential trouble spots include Amarillo, Dalhart, Dumas, Canadian, US-287, and I-40

    • Expect travel delays during the Thursday morning commute

Sleet may mix in across portions of Northwest Texas, though widespread freezing issues appear unlikely there. The Panhandle is the main zone to watch.

Rain and Storms for Southeast & East Texas

As snow falls up north, the eastern half of Texas will deal with cold rain and thunderstorms.

Storm Details:

  • Scattered storms expected this evening into Thursday

  • Stronger cells may produce nickel to quarter-size hail in Southeast Texas and the Golden Triangle

  • Tornado threat is very low, but not zero

  • Locally heavy rain could lead to street flooding

Lightning will make Thursday morning unpleasant across parts of East and Southeast Texas, though widespread severe weather is not anticipated.

Thursday: Cold, Wet, and Unpleasant Statewide

Thursday won’t win any awards in the weather department.

  • Today is the warm day — temperatures drop sharply overnight

  • Thursday highs:

    • 30s & 40s: Panhandle, NW Texas

    • 40s & 50s: North, Central, and East Texas

    • 50s & 60s: Southeast Texas

    • 70s/80s: Deep South Texas only

  • Snow gradually ends by midday in the Panhandle, but melting will be slow where heavier bands occur

Rainfall Totals Through Friday Morning

According to the Weather Prediction Center:

  • 1.5–3 inches: Upper Texas Gulf Coast (Galveston, Houston, Beaumont, Sabine Pass)

  • 0.5–1 inch: East Texas, Northeast Texas, Brazos Valley

  • 0.1–0.3 inches: Central, South Central, Hill Country

  • Light totals: Western Texas (snow instead of rain in the Panhandle)

Rain lingers into Friday morning before diminishing statewide.

Weekend: Warming Trend Ahead

Beginning Friday afternoon, Texas starts to dry out.

  • Saturday: 60s–70s for most, 50s in the Panhandle

  • Sunday: 50s north, 60s and 70s central/south, 80s deep south

  • Sunshine returns statewide

  • No major storm systems expected this weekend

Early December Outlook

The Climate Prediction Center suggests:

  • Above-average temperatures for West & South Texas

  • Near-average temperatures elsewhere

  • Drier-than-average conditions for most of the state

A calm stretch looks likely after we get past Thursday and Friday.
