Snow Winds Down, but Slick Roads Remain Possible
Our first winter event of the season delivered a swath of snow across the Texas Panhandle, parts of West Texas, and portions of Northwest Texas overnight into early Thursday morning. Many areas saw a dusting to an inch, while a few narrow bands produced up to three inches south of Amarillo.
Those who land under these heavier “surprise” snow corridors know the drill: conditions can change fast. With temperatures staying cold through sunset, any remaining wet roads in the Panhandle, West Texas, and Northwest Texas could refreeze tonight. Bridges and overpasses are the most vulnerable. Use caution if traveling after dark. Texas road conditions can be found at DriveTexas.org.
Rain Continues Across the Southeastern Half of Texas
While winter settles in up north, the southeastern half of Texas is stuck under thick clouds, fog, drizzle, and recurring rounds of showers.
A break in the steady rain is expected this afternoon, but more showers expand back into the region tonight through Friday morning. The Friday morning commute across Southeast Texas, the Golden Triangle, East Texas, the Brazos Valley, and South-Central Texas is likely to be wet, gloomy, and slow.
Severe weather is not expected, though a few storms near the upper Texas Gulf Coast may briefly produce small hail.
Friday Morning: Wet, Foggy, and Not Fun
Fog, mist, low ceilings, and scattered showers will blanket the southeastern half of Texas early Friday morning. Visibility reductions are likely, especially along the Upper Texas Gulf Coast and inland into the Brazos Valley. Roads will remain damp through midday.
By Friday afternoon, rain starts tapering from west to east as drier air arrives.
Extended Dry Stretch Arrives This Weekend
After Saturday morning, most of Texas enters what looks like a prolonged dry period. Skies clear out, temperatures warm, and the pattern overall becomes much quieter.
That means a brief break from soggy roads… but it also means wildfire danger will start creeping back up by late next week. Many areas across northern and central Texas have already seen a season-ending freeze, making vegetation ready to dry quickly.
Temperatures: Cold Today, Warmer This Weekend
Thursday Highs:
• 30s in the Panhandle and Northwest Texas
• 40s across North Texas, Northeast Texas, and parts of Central Texas
• 50s across South-Central Texas
• Mild mid-70s in deep South Texas before cooler air arrives
Friday:
• Cooler across South Texas with highs in the upper 60s
• Continued chilly feel in the eastern half of the state
• Warming trend begins in West Texas, Big Country, and the Permian Basin
Saturday:
• Much warmer statewide
• 70s return to the Hill Country, South Texas, and the Rio Grande Valley
• 60s across Central and North Texas
• Upper 50s to low 60s in the Panhandle
Sunday & Monday:
• Reinforcing cool front Sunday
• Monday highs back in the 40s north, 50s–60s elsewhere
Looking Ahead
A long stretch of dry weather settles in this weekend and holds through early next week. Temperatures warm above seasonal averages before another weak front early next week briefly knocks things down again. For early December in Texas, it’s a pretty manageable pattern.
